Frequently Asked Questions

Air-conditioning is in your car to ensure you have a steady-controlled climate, after time, there can be a build-up of air and moisture as well as bacteria, this causes horrible smells in your car.

We recommend either once or twice a year, depending on your make of car and how often you use the air-conditioning

Common problems are lack of air-conditioning gas, normally due to lack of servicing, leaks as well as bacteria build-ups and the presence of air and moisture.

You do use a little more fuel when running the air-conditioning but not as much as driving with the windows open.

Your air-conditioning in your works in two ways: Evaporation and Condensation. The vaporisation of a liquid that occurs only on the surface of the liquid. Condensation is the opposite of evaporation, this is when the gas changes to a liquid.

Your system needs a certain amount of refrigerant in order to operate correctly. Normally it is best to drain what's left and completely renew the gas.

Air-Conditioning Explained

All air conditioning systems operate in a similar way with components such as a compressor, condenser, expansion valve, receiver, drier and evaporator. The car air conditioning system is pressurised by a gas known as a refrigerant and how much refrigerant is used to fill the system differs from vehicle to vehicle.

The compressor compresses the refrigerant from the gaseous state into a fluid. The refrigerant then flows through the condenser and takes out the heat, then moves on to the expansion valve. This reduces the pressure in the line and the refrigerant returns to a gaseous state. Next, the refrigerant enters the receiver drier and all the moisture is removed. Then it passes from the evaporator and into the passenger compartment. The heat is removed from the air and transferred into the refrigerant.

TWO TYPES OF AIR-CONDITIONING GAS

The R1234YF Gas – This gas is more environmentally-friendly as it produces 98% fewer climate-damaging pollutants than its predecessor and any vehicle manufacturered after January 2017 uses it.

The 134A Gas – This has been the most common gas and is used by all cars prior to January 2017.

The Elite Motorists Centre in Sandy caters for both gas types.
